Managers and supervisors need information on the basics of employment laws on the federal and state level, but also about organizational practices and tools. In order to ensure proper communication and understanding of the practices and tools, training is needed. The course will outline federal and state laws dealing with employment. This course will both educate supervisors and managers about legal issues and will reduce the risk of possible legal liability which could stem from unfairness, inconsistency, or discrimination.

  • Discrimination: Anti-discrimination laws affecting hiring, promotion, transfers, and other terms and conditions of employment.

  • Wage and Hour Law Basics: Test for Exemption from the Fair Labor Standards Act (Exempt/Non-exempt classification), Overtime issues, Family and Medical Leave, practices for requesting time off, completing a time report, and other compensation and payroll issues.

  • Recordkeeping Issues: Maintenance of supervisory files and records, record retention process, privacy and confidentiality issues. Forms to Use, procedures to follow. Special attention will be given to medical information, requests for Medical Leave, or any information regarding accommodations under the ADA or workers' compensation.

  • Hiring Practices: Process to follow, forms to use, documentation requirements. How to write a job description, place an advertisement, sort through resumes, conduct an effective interview, evaluate applicants, decide upon the best candidate, make an offer of employment, and check references.

  • Performance Management: Issues relating to new employee orientation, performance reviews, corrective action, discipline and termination. How to set goals, delegate effectively, and manage the productivity of a team.

This course is designed for all managers and supervisors. It ensures that all people making management decisions understand their roles and responsibilities.
Timing: This course can be delivered with a minimum of 4 hours, preferably more to ensure questions and thorough understanding.
